David & Lucy’s Relaxed and Beautiful Wedding at Barns & Yard, Worcestershire

Some weddings just feel like a big warm hug from start to finish—and that was exactly the vibe for David and Lucy’s day at Barns & Yard, tucked away in the Malvern countryside.

This venue? Wow. It was my first time shooting there, and it totally blew me away. Set on the grounds of Hanley Hall, Barns & Yard has the perfect mix of rustic and refined: oak beams, modern glass walls, a peaceful lake with a wooden bridge, and a courtyard that just begs for golden hour drinks. As someone who specialises in natural and relaxed wedding photography in Worcestershire and the surrounding counties, I was in my element.

Getting Ready: Prosecco, Laughter & Sentimental Touches.

The day kicked off with David getting ready in a local Airbnb, surrounded by family and groomsmen. Over at the venue, Lucy was having a quiet, joy-filled morning with her bridesmaids. One of the sweetest moments? Lucy putting on a necklace her sister, Katie’s necklace — a subtle but beautiful tribute.

And in true wedding morning style, there was one cork-popping moment that backfired spectacularly (shoutout to the bridesmaid who accidentally threw a full glass of prosecco into her own face. Iconic).

The weather was that dream combo every wedding photographer hopes for: calm, warm, dry, and just enough cloud cover to give us that perfect soft light.

An Emotional Ceremony with a Historic Twist.

The ceremony took place inside one of the converted barns—light flooding in through a huge glass window, making the whole space glow. David had a tear in his eye as he waited for Lucy to arrive, and there was an emotional first look between Lucy and her dad that got everyone who saw it misty-eyed.

One unexpected highlight? The registrar used David’s love of history to explain the traditional aisle setup: he should keep his sword hand (yes, sword hand) free to defend his new wife. Brilliant.

David and Lucy were both visibly nervous, but every time they looked at each other, you could see the nerves melt away. Just non-stop smiling—those are the moments that make you melt behind the camera.

Photography Style: Real Moments Over Posed Perfection.

My approach for the day was pure documentary wedding photography. I blended in, chatted to guests, and captured everything as it happened—real, unfiltered, and full of energy. We had two couple shoots: one earlier in the day and one at golden hour to make the most of that dreamy light and get a proper mix in the gallery.

There’s one image that really sums them up: David and Lucy on the bridge, mid-convo, just beaming at each other. It wasn’t staged. They were just living it. That’s what I’m all about—fun, candid, and storytelling wedding photography that captures what the day actually felt like.

I also flew the drone to help set the scene in the gallery—showing off the venue and giving everything that little cinematic edge.

Touching Speeches & a Gnocchi Station (Winner).

The reception barn was stunning. High ceilings, natural beams, beautifully styled tables, and this warm, welcoming atmosphere that made everyone feel at home.

David’s two best men brought the laughs with stories from their friendship—some embarrassing, most heartwarming. And David’s own speech had a lovely moment where he paid tribute to family who are no longer here, which hit everyone right in the feels.

As the sun went down, the party kicked off. The band played indie anthems, the dancefloor filled up (special shoutout to David and Lucy’s mates who went all in), and the evening food? A gnocchi station. I’ve seen a lot of cool wedding food, but this was a first—and it was banging.

The People That Made It.

Beyond David & Lucy themselves - who were so warm and grateful and just an absolute dream to work with - the star of the day was their niece, Winnie. Even though she wasn’t feeling 100%, she was still adorable, stealing hearts all day long.

I’ve actually known David for about 25 years, which made this one even more special. I first met him at Primary School and to this day I’m still playing football weekly. Watching him so full of love on his wedding day, and seeing how loved he is in return, was genuinely an honour to photograph.

Thinking of Booking Barns & Yard?

Do it. The venue’s stunning, the staff are great, and the photo opportunities are endless. If you’re looking for a documentary wedding photographer in the West Midlands or you’re planning a fun, relaxed wedding in Worcestershire, this is the kind of day I’d love to shoot again.

And if you want natural, honest photos that tell the full story without a load of awkward posing—drop me a message. I’d love to hear all about your plans.
